Times Tables

Where are multiplication and division taught in our maths curriculum?

Every term, multiplication and division units are revisited within our spiral curriculum. We use the concrete, pictoral and abstract methods to teach and support pupils understanding of the mathematical concepts in multiplication and division.

What mathematical vocabulary linked to multiplication and division do we teach?

Multiplication and division language is used and reinforced. We teach the following vocabulary: times, multiply by, lots of, groups of, repeated addition, inverse operation, divide, how many go into, shared and groups of.

How often do we ‘explicitly’ teach multiplication?

We teach times tables daily. We use the Tables Stick to teach and learn multiplication and division number facts. Tables Stick focuses on strategy based learning, helping pupils make sense of times tables by building on what they already know. This practical approach highlights mathematical patterns and connections, making times tables meaningful and locking facts into long-term memory.

The use of Tables Stick encourages pupils to articulate their mathematical reasoning, promoting the use of maths language in the classroom. By explaining their strategies and making predictions, pupils strengthen their understanding and improve their ability to communicate mathematical concepts clearly.

What order do we teach the times tables?

We teach stage, not age. The progression of knowledge is as follows:

  • (Y1 expectations) Count in multiples of twos, fives and tens
  • (Y2 expectations) Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables
  • (Y3 expectations) Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables
  • (Y4 expectations ) Recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 x 12

How do we ‘deliberately’ practice times table knowledge?

All pupils have a Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) account. The class teacher assigns each pupil the tables their need to learn. We challenge all pupils to use TTRS at least three times a week to practice the recall of multiplication and division facts.

How do we assess pupils’ times table knowledge?

Teacher provide feedback to pupils in our daily sessions. Pupils complete a fortnightly times tables check on the facts they have been learning to see how well they are doing.

How can pupils continue their learning of times table and division knowledge at home?

All pupils have their TTRS account login sent home each term. Class teachers reward pupils who regularly access their account at home with Milton Merits.

Each autumn term parents are invited to a fun times table workshop with our school maths leader. Parents are shown how we teach multiplication and division at Milton, how we use the Tables Sticks and how to access TTRockstars at home.
