We know our pupils.
The right curriculum for each pupil to achieve great things.
British Values
At our school, British Values are at the heart of everyday learning and school life. We promote democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs through our curriculum, assemblies and the way we work together as a community.
We use the Jigsaw PSHE scheme to help children understand their rights, responsibilities and how their choices affect others. Through lessons such as Being Me in My World and Changing Me, pupils learn about fairness, rules, relationships and respect, as well as how to express their views and listen to those of others — all key parts of living in a democratic society.
We also use Picture News to bring British Values to life through real-world stories. Each week, children explore a current news topic, share opinions, debate ideas and consider different viewpoints. This helps them develop skills in democracy, respect, tolerance and critical thinking in a meaningful and engaging way.
Alongside this, whole-school assemblies regularly focus on British Values, linking them to events in the world, behaviour in school and our shared expectations. Pupils are encouraged to reflect on how these values help everyone feel safe, included and respected.
Through these approaches, we ensure that all pupils grow into thoughtful, confident and responsible citizens.
The Key Values are:
Democracy plays an important role at Milton and is evidenced across the day where pupils may vote for preferred activities, books or games. Our Student Counsellors are elected democratically following a vote and during changes in recent history, including general elections, we have promoted the understanding of democracy through exploring these political periods.
A fundamental part of life at Milton includes the rule of Law and to support our learners in developing their understanding of its importance in their wider communities. All pupils are encouraged to follow the school rules as well creating and agreeing upon class rules. These expectations are upheld by the behaviour policy we have in place. All our staff have had regular safeguarding training and recent training on behaviour management. Our full complement of staff follows the school’s behaviour policy to enable students to feel safe at school and understand our expectations of them. Within PSHE and circle time sessions, the rule of law is further explored.
Access to a robust communication system and being empowered to have and use their voice is a core attitude underpinning every stage of the curriculum. We actively encourage our learners to have their own views and opinions and seek these through a variety of ways including: debates, discussions, circle times, surveys, choices and objects of reference. Assemblies celebrate both learning achievements and life-long learners, where children bring and share their successes in a wide variety of areas, such as sports and other outside interests. We celebrate the languages and cultures of our pupils during our special days or weeks across the academic year including Black History Month and during festivals such as Christmas and Diwali.
We celebrate the diversity of our society by a variety of different means including special days and festivals such as Easter or Eid, through discrete RE lessons and through encouraging personal reflection which may link to a personal faith or belief system. At Milton we encourage spirituality through reflection, restoration time and respecting the world in which we inhabit.
