We know our pupils.
The right curriculum for each pupil to achieve great things.
Language & Communication
English is a vital part of our curriculum. We aim to provide our Explorers pupils with strong foundational skills that enable them to access learning at a developmentally appropriate level, while maintaining high aspirations for every learner.
We teach communication daily to our explorers, we adopt a five day approach, incorporating SALT, expressive language, receptive language, intentional language including both gross motor and fine motor skills.
Expressive communication at Milton school is supported through speech, vocalisations, gestures, facial expressions, signs, symbols, and the use of assistive and alternative communication (AAC) systems. By developing expressive communication skills, pupils gain greater independence, confidence, and self-advocacy, enabling them to actively participate in learning, build relationships, and engage with their world.
Receptive communication at Milton school is developed through listening, visual supports, gestures, symbols, routines, and sensory cues. By strengthening receptive communication skills, pupils are better able to understand instructions, anticipate daily activities, make sense of social interactions, and feel secure and engaged in their learning and everyday experiences.
Intentional communication at Milton school is fostered by helping students recognise that their actions, sounds, gestures, words, or use of communication systems can convey meaning. By developing intentional communication skills, pupils learn that communication has purpose, allowing them to make choices, express preferences, initiate interactions, and engage more meaningfully with others and their environment.
Our aim is to empower every Milton pupil with the skills and confidence to communicate effectively.
